Looking for the words to describe Tawali in Papua New Guinea, and what I come up with, Remote Luxury with more than a Splash of Warmth mixed in with a Spirit of friendliness.
Undoubtedly Tawali is one the best resorts I have had the pleasure to visit and most probably one of the few that caters for both Divers and Non Divers, Singles and Families that will put this resort on the top of any listing.
I was always fascinated and drawn to the omnipotent of the Kokoda Track in PNG. For Australians it is a piece of history that we do not celebrate, there are no national holidays.
It is an amazing story of courage and endurance. It is a victory beyond human endeavour; we were outnumbered 5:1 almost impossible to win. I have never been prouder to shout ‘I am Australian’ on our 9th day when we reached Isurava Village, we were close to our 96km end point I felt we could walk in their footsteps but never in their shoes, we had a very small infinitesimal taste of their hardship.
With so much attention placed on Kokoda, that iconic rite-of-passage for around 6,000 Aussie trekkers a year, you could be forgiven for thinking that Papua New Guinea is a mono-dimensional travel destination. Far from it. The reality is our closest neighbour is multi-dimensional, providing an unexpected range of attractions appealing to ever growing numbers of visitors.
PNG has quietly experienced six years of consecutive inbound tourism growth and while many other destinations around the globe are experiencing negative results 2009 looks set to be another positive year.
