ABOUT THE NIUGINI BASS

The PNG Black and Spot Tailed Bass are very slow growing fish. A mature fish may be 12 to 15 years old and larger Bass around 40 pounds are possibly up to 30 years old. Bass are part of the Lutjanidis family and learn very quickly, hence they sometimes "shut down" if a river is over fished. During times when the rivers are flooding, they tend not to feed in the main rivers and you will need to work harder in the secondary creeks and back waters to entice them.

All Bass are released and we will make all attempts to ensure a long term plan is in place to protect the species. Tours will be spaced at least a week apart. with limits on bookings. The Lodge will have a closed season from January to end of March. June through to November are the better months of the dry season.

The fastidious habits of both species of PNG Bass and the very nature of their reputation, make them the ultimate adversary in sportsfishing today.
