Watut River Tragedy
The wild and rugged Watut River in Morobe Province claimed the lives of three Israelis in late May. Yisrael Yeruham of Gadera, Shlomo Haruvi (62 years) of Haifa and Itamar Haikin (52 yrs) of Tel Aviv were all part of the Neharot Expeditions - a private world white water rafting expedition based out of Israel. The three died as a result of an unfortunate accident, when their boat dropped into a canyon and flipped over causing them to drown in the fast flowing river. Neharot Expeditions said despite their many years of rafting experience and strict safety precautions, the confrontation with the elements led to tragic results. PNG Minister for Culture & Tourism Hon. David Basua expressed sympathy at the loss and sent condolences to family and friends of the deceased. The bodies left PNG soil on May 23 on their way back home to Israel for burial via Australia. However, despite the tragedy, several surviving members of the expedition vowed to return to PNG as they had been captivated by the beauty of our people, culture and environment. The PNG Tourism Promotion Authority also acknowledges the loss of lives and convey our sincere condolences to family and friends.

Lukim PNG 2005 - A Major Success
Despite the crowd figures being slightly down from last year, the 2005 Lukim PNG Nau (See Papua New Guinea Now) Tourism Exposition was as major success for the organisers, exhibitors, buyers and the visiting public. More than 2500 visitors came to the expo over the three days to see what PNG can offer in terms of its unique and niche tourism products such as diving, fishing, trekking, rafting, colour or just view the products and services that are available in the tourism industry. For the first time, Lukim PNG attracted international buyers from Australia, Germany, United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Baltic and the United States and they were impressed with what the 36 exhibitors put on show. Milne Bay Tourism won the best display booth award. Major sponsors SP Brewery, Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority have been commended for supporting this year's expo. A special thank you also to all exhibitors, all involved and a very special mention to the PNG Tourism Industry Association for hosting another successful expo.

Filming Pippi Longstocking
Pippi Longstocking! The red headed imp of the perverse with the gravity-defying pigtails from the popular children's book of the same name could have her origins here in PNG. This factor alone has attracted a group of Swedish/German filmmakers - who are now planning to shot a multi-million-dollar feature film on magical Tabar Islands in New Ireland Province. However, rather than focus on the little girl with those cute little freckles on her face, the movie traces the life of her father Carl Emil Petterson, who was shipwrecked and crawled onto a beach on Big Tabar some 100 years ago. 'Masta Salle' - as he was latter known by the locals - befriended the island's cannibal chief Lamis and later married his daughter, Sindu, who bore nine children. The film titled "Efraim Longstocking & the Cannibal Princess is currently at pre-production stage. For more info email:

Getaway on Kokoda
The popular holiday-travel show "Getaway" on Australia's Channel 9 network is currently filming an episode for its upcoming programs on the historical Kokoda Track. The 'Channel 9 Getway Kokoda Trek' commenced in Kokoda on July 3 with the official welcome including a flag raising ceremony and cultural dances for the 4-member crew and 70 trekkers from Australia. Facilitated by tour operator Adventure Kokoda in collaboration with  Kokoda Track Authority, the 12-day trek will also comprise 125 guides and porters and will end with the sounds of a buglar and lone piper at the Bomana War Cemetary. The organisers and Channel 9 hope to capture some spectacular footage of the trek and have arranged a Fuzzy-Wuzzy Angel re-enactment at Kovelo Village, a small dawn service at Isurava Memorial on July 5, a village rugby match between Kagi and Efogi and a women's soccer match at Menari. It is hoped a buglar will accompany the trek to sound 'Reveille' and the 'Last Post' each day to reinforce the military historical side of the Kokoda Track. Getaway is aired in 30 countries worldwide with a viewing audience of 10 million. PNG TPA NEWS

TPA meets overseas agents
Overseas destination marketing representatives for the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) and national flag carrier Air Niugini were in town late June to present briefs of their respective markets. Kerry Bryd (USA), Rudiger Knospe (German), Stephan Hoffstrom and Svein Dieserud (Scadinavia & Baltics) and Per Seather (Norway) met with Air Niugini commercial manager Bob Martin and TPA chief executive officer Peter Vincent and divisional managers at the Gateway Hotel. They all agreed that such meetings on a regular basis was important for either party to know and appreciate what everyone was doing in terms of marketing PNG as a desired destination in the respective markets. The overseas representatives also took the opportunity to visit Lukim PNG, as well as visit other destinations in PNG. They will be back in October for the South Pacific Tourism Conference.

INDUSTRY NEWS

National Tourism Awareness
The national tourism awareness currently being undertaken by the Tourism Promotion Authority is slowly but surely gaining popularity. The highlight so far has been Chimbu province, home of Mount Wilhelm (4509 meters) - the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea. The workshop in Kundiawa drew many from the provincial government, administration, industry, non-government organisations and other stakeholders. The program has two components - awareness and training, for small industry members. The program has covered Goroka, Mount Hagen and Tari in the last two weeks and will now be moving to Bougainville. The theme message for the awareness is straight forward: "Tourism is everyone business, everyone benefits from tourism, let's all look after our visitors." For more info on the program email: gpakio@pngtourism.org.pg or visit: www.pngtourism.org.pg
