Gogodala Canoe Festival attracts its first tourists

Californian natives Craig and Anita Miskel will be forever etched in Gogodala folklore as the first international tourists to visit their annual canoe festival. The Miskels were mesmerized by the sight of the many elaborately crafted single hull dugout war canoes with 40 to 60 warriors racing each other in the lagoon in Balimo. Anita recalled that her father a World War 2 veteran had always spoke so highly of the smiles and the warm and friendly nature of the Papua New Guinea people since she was a kid. “Since, I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to come here and what my father told me all those years ago is true. The people are so friendly,” she said. Trans Niugini Tours owner Bob Bates and his pilot Dwayne Elderkin flew the Miskels to Balimo from Mt Hagen in the company aircraft. Bob was also impressed with the show and the hospitality, he promised to bring more tourists in 2009.
