REGIONAL NEWS

2005 - Big Year for PNG
Papua New Guinea is geared up for what is expected to be a big year of celebrations in 2005. The country celebrates its 30th Anniversary of Independence and plays hosts to several major regional events including the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), Melanesian Spearhaed Group (MSG) meeting and the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) conference and the Council of (Tourism) Ministers meeting. The MSG is slated for the end of August in the highlands town of Goroka where leaders from Melanesian states PNG, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu hold talks before traveling down to Port Moresby in early September to join leaders from the other Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand for the PIF. Leaders from the 14 member island nations will then hold their one day retreat in the resort town of Kokopo. These will all culminate with PNG's 30th Independence anniversary on September 16, 2005 where major celebrations are planned across the country, and particularly in the capital Port Moresby, as international guests are expected to attend. On October 18 - 21, chief executives of all national tourism offices in the Pacific and their respective Tourism Ministers will again converge on Port Moresby for the bi-annual SPTO Confernece and Council of Ministers Meeting. The PNG Tourism Promotion Authority as the host has taken the lead in coordinating meetings with relevant government departments and agencies to ensure PNG hosts the best conference of the SPTO. OH, What a Country
The idea of seeing the best of the Papua New Guinean countryside on a motorbike, more so as a cross-country sport and a tourism attraction, was trialed last weekend on the 360 kilometre stretch between Pogera in Enga Province to Mount Hagen in Western Highlands. Sponsored by PNG's Toyota dealer Ela Motors and dubbed the Yamaha Tour of Enga, it was obviously done on Yamaha motorbikes. The ride was symbolic as the only two riders on this tour were Enga Governor Peter Ipatas and Ela Motors managing director Wally Haydok. "It was very obvious that Governor Ipatas is extremely popular with his Engan people as demonstrated by the joyous crowd reactions in every town and village," Mr Haydok said at the end of the ride. And added: "The Enga countryside was absolutely beauiful and the people were extremely warm and friendly." To read more about the Yamaha Tour visit our website: www.pngtourism.org.pg

Tourism Product Inventory Project
The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority has engaged the services of tourism and hospitality students from the Divine Word University to conduct research on all tourism establishments in East New Britain, Morobe and Chimbu.
Chief Executive Officer Mr Peter Vincent said TPA with the corporation of the provincial administrations intends to compile a complete date of all tourism related products and services.
Mr. Vincent has called on all players in the tourism industry including industry members, stakeholders, government and non-government organisations and others to corporate with the students who are already on the ground in these provinces.
He said the information collected will also go a long way in assisting TPA to put in place minimum standards and guidelines for the industry.
He said the students with the assistance of Provincial Tourism Officers (PTOs) are collecting data ranging from accommodations, transport industry, airline operators, land transport operators, sea transport operators – passenger vessels, restaurants and clubs, tour operators & travel agents, tourist attractions, stakeholders and government agencies.
Mr Vincent said the research requires the students to make appointments with relevant agencies and individuals, whom they will interview for information.
“Everyone involved in tourism are kindly asked to provide information in this exercise as PNGTPA endeavours to improve the tourism capacity of the provinces and drive the industry forward,” he said.
The Tourism Product Inventory Project started on October 18 and will end on December 10, 2004.
This is an initiative of the Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority in its endeavour to work closely with the industry players, PTO’s and relevant stakeholders in trying to promote PNG as a desired tourist destination in years to come.
