Milamala Yam Festival, Milne Bay
The Trobriand Islands were dubbed the Islands of Love by Bronislau Malinowski due to the unusual sexual practices he observed among them in the 1920s. Ethnographic studies of this period are notoriously unreliable however so don't expect any Gauguinesque naked natives here. From June to August every year, Kiriwina Island is busy celebrating the annual yam festival during which families compare their yam sizes as part of a series of festivities. The event begins with a procession of men carrying the newly harvested yams from the garden storage hut to the village yam houses while the women ahead sing and dance. During the festival time, traditional rites are observed. (Visit www.pngtourism.org.pg or e-mail info@pngtourism.org.pg for more information)
