Bird Watchers

Rare PNG Birds Draw Bird Watchers
PAPUA New Guinea has about 315 of the world's unique bird species including 33 species of the adored Birds of Paradise. It is little wonder birding enthusiasts or "twitches" from around the world are now beginning to frequent PNG. Recently, a group of 11 twitches from Finland spent 18 days in the country visiting Tari, Kiunga, Mount Hagen and Variarata National Park outside Port Moresby to find and photograph some of PNG's unique bird species. Group leader Lasse Laine - a veteran twitcher who traveled to 76 countries in the last 40 years - said "PNG has some of the most beautiful birds in the world, especially the Greater Bird of Paradise." Laine said birdwatching is a big thing in Western Europe particularly, England, Sweden & Finland.

Mining on Kokoda
THE Kokoda Track - Papua New Guinea's popular tourism icon - is under threat from mining. Australian company Frontier Resources is carrying out exploration in the area for gold and copper deposits. The Kokoda Track Foundation (KTF) has called on both the Papua New Guinean and Australian Governments to join forces and develop a master plan for the management of the Kokoda Track to protect it from a range of serious threats from both mining and forestry interests. However, according to media reports both Frontier Resources and the PNG Government have denied any confirmed mining activity or any imminent damage to the Kokoda Track. According to KTF, World Wildlife Fund has secured a tentative World Heritage listing for the Kokoda Track. KTF says this the first stage of the Track's journey to long term protection indicates that the World Heritage authority recognises the area has the qualities needed to meet strict world Heritage criteria.

Tourism Master Plan Released to Government
THE final report on the Tourism Sector Review & the National Tourism Master Plan was released mid-Sept to the national government. The review was undertaken jointly by the Independent Consumer & Competitions Commission and the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority. This followed directives from the Ministerial Committee on Tourism to fully review the industry here. The master plan was the initiative of the PNG TPA to have in place a document that would act as the roadmap for the next 10 years (2007 - 2017). The report titled 'Growing PNG Tourism as a Sustainable Industry' highlights that the overall goal for PNG should be to double the number of tourists on holiday in PNG every five years and to take steps to maximize sustainable tourism growth for the social and environmental benefits of all Papua New Guineans. In terms of revenue, that will be worth around K1.1 billion per annum, while generating additional 4, 800 employment opportunities by 2010 and 13, 000 by 2015. Copies of the report can be obtained from the PNGTPA website: www.pngtourism.org.pg or ICCC website: www.iccc.gov.pg

Kokoda Numbers Increase
THE popularity of the Kokoda Track continues to  grow every year. As at September, 3,270 tourists trekked the wartime track made famous by Australian diggers and their Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. This is compared to 2,374 trekkers for the whole of 2005 and 1,584 in 2004. The increase in numbers has also seen Kokoda Track Authority earn more than half a million Kina in trek fees alone. There was also estimated earnings of about K10 million to the tourism industry generally. According to KTA, the statistics are only based on trekkers that had obtained trek permits. KTA is the sole issuing authority for individual or group trek permits for the Kokoda Track. For more info Email: kokodatrackauthority@global.net.pg

Kokoda Taster
DYING to have a feel of the famous Kokoda Track or just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Port Moresby? Why not try the Kokoda Taster offered by local operator Fuzzy Wuzzy Expeditions. The Kokoda Taster is a short half-day trek starting Saturday mornings from Owers Corner down to Goldie River then up the Golden Stairs to Imita Ridge. This trek is pretty easy and many children have already experienced it with their parents. Many corporate executives and their staff are taking on the Kokoda Taster as a bonding session or just a relaxed Saturday outing. Of course, Imita Ridge was significant to the Kokoda Campaign as it was here that the Aussie Diggers made their last stand to repel the advancing Japanese Army, which retreated and eventually surrendered at Buna. The Kokoda Taster is our Hot Product for the Month of September. For bookings or info  Email: info@fuzzywuzzy.com.pg or Ph: (675) 6883231 or (675) 3200211 and ask for Lora.
